Nature Day, October 2025

The children from St Mary and St Benedict’s school in Coventry, as always, thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Abbey Fields, marking the first of this new school year. Fourteen children joined us on our whistle stop tour of all things autumnal.

“Our visits to Abbey Fields at the invitation of FOAF have provided children with an introduction to this fantastic space, and the guided tours have shown them many hidden treasures among the plants and animals in the park.”

The trees and leaf colours were magnificent, especially the Sweet Chestnut in the Churchyard. Chestnuts, acorns, sycamore ‘helicopter’ seeds, and beech nuts were plentiful as we followed our usual path. We discussed the connection between the dock leaf and the stinging nettle, talked about the importance of the bull rush (including the story of Moses), and answered questions about the molehills and their inhabitants.

The lake’s water levels were low, but this time, numerous birds were present, including a flock of Canada Geese. The solitary moorhen appeared as the children eagerly tossed their bird feed into the water.

And, as always, the highlight was the swings and slides. The children loved their time there.
